Cat Tobin of Pelgrane Press relayed to me your permission for use of this image in our Esperanto translation of "Cugel the Clever" as a free ebook. Thank you very much! You and Pelgrane Press are both duly attributed inside the book. The thumbnail cover on our download page links directly to this, your DA page.

Wondering if you might consent to my using this image as the cover for my translation into Esperanto of "Cugel the Clever" (aka "Eyes of the Overworld"). It is an authorized translation, but non-commercial. I got this permission originally from JV in person. Presently that right is extended by John Vance at Spatterlight Press.

I can't offer payment since I distribute all my translated ebooks for free. The reason for this is that it is futile trying to wring profit from a market so small that's distributed all over the world. I gave up on that a decade ago because it sapped all joy from the project. Until last year, I used to publish in HTML. But now there are ebooks, so I have since switched to that route.

In it's present state, the book is now fully translated (whole months of effort) but being proofread by a cohort of mine in Spain. Internal chapter-head illustrations are still being worked on by Paul Rhoads, ersatz Editor-in-Chief of the VIE, on which project I too volunteered. But I still need to come up with a cover. And your drawing here is so very fine that I cannot resist but to ask. But I suppose you've already sold publication rights to Pelgrane Press.

A most excellent Cugel! I met Jack Vance once, while working on the Vance Integral Edition (as a highly productive lesser minion). While there, I finalized arrangments for permission to translate him into Esperanto. Currently I have seven stories done, with the eighth, "The Sorceror Pharesm" (a Cugel adventure) about 75% roughed out. The eBooks I give away free on-line (with permission ONLY to do this in Esperanto from he estate). Most, but not all have cover art. But only one has internal, story-line drawings. But it's a volunteer project, just like the VIE. So if you one day feel altruistic, please kindly consider doing a cover, or internals...whatever you like. The project is here: esperanto.us

One novel in the Dying Earth cycle is, unfortunantly, non-canon. A QUEST FOR SIMBILIS by Michael Shea is an absorbing sequel to EYES OF THE OVERWORLD, but it is non-canon because Vance did not use it but wrote his own sequel CUGEL'S SAGA.

Cugel asks Simbilis XVI why he is building a mile-tall titan to leave the earth the moment the sun dies -and the earth with it !. why not feed the sun ? Simbilis replies that earth is very old, has been the scene of enormous crimes, over millions of years, and has earned its imminent icy quiet.

Cugel incurred the wrath of the Laughing Magician (the epithet was due to the way he dealt with offenders, hilarious & imaginative to him, but painful and not funny at all to the victims).

For attempting to pillage Iocounu's manse (Pergola) but getting stuck in a maze, Cugel was directed to get a violet cusp (a relic of the Cutz Wars of the 17th aeon*, like the pectoral spatterlight. By a spell, a demon was summoned to carry Cugel to the far north, where the senile sun casts no more light than a candle, to obtain a cusp. Cugel was dispatched without food or rest. He was provided with an amulet that turned inedibles into food (but didn't change the flavor)and also sounded a chime if poison was in what was served him. Cugel was also afflicted with a parasite named Firx whose only form of communication was to lacerate his liver !

Cugel found the cusp (in the possession of a tribe that wasn't going to just give it to him, but put him on a waiting list).and it was his way back that provided the basis of several episodes of the book, EYES OF THE OVERWORLD.

Jack Vance is old and just about blind now, and so, we expect no further books from his pen or word processor or whatever . He never codified the history of the Dying Earth.

* Unless Jack Vance self-plagiarized, an aeon is estimated to be ~200,000 years by me.

That's what you get for messing with Iucounu, Cugel!

Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for we are subtle, and quick to anger....

When in my fan-fics, Wendy was packed off to Domdaniel in the Black Forest, Casper went along to make sure that she wasn't turned evil -or insane there.

At latest tally, the line of witches and wizards who would DESTROY him should he openly show his face again, stretches around the block ! He has blocked & checked them too much !

Sensible ghosts do not meddle with witches & wizards.
